The Mid-Autumn Festival

mid-autumn festival1

The Mid-Autumn Festival (or called Chinese Moon Festival)falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon looks roundest, representing family reunion, so the family members would get together on the day in any case. Chinese culture is deeply imbedded in traditional festivals. Just like Christmas and Thanksgiving in the West, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important traditional events for the Chinese.

As the Chinese festivals are usually related to food, the Mid-Autumn Festival is no exceptioin. The food of the festival is also round to symbolize family reunion. The food made of flour and various seasonings is called mooncake. On the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the whole family would sit under the moonlight, eating mooncakes and various fruits, while appreciating the moon, talking and laughing.

There is an interesting history story about the Mid-Autumn Festival. Long ago in one of the dynasties of China there was a king who was very cruel to the people and did not manage the country well. The people were so angry that some brave ones suggested killing the king. So they wrote notes telling about the meeting place and time and put them into cakes. On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month every person was told to buy the cakes. When they ate them they discovered the notes. So they gathered together to make a sudden attack on the king. From then on the Chinese people celebrate on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month and eat "moon cakes" in memory of that important event.

mid-autumn festival When will the moon be clear and bright?
With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the blue sky.
I don't know what season it would be in the heavens on this night.
[míng yuè jǐ shí yǒu, bá jiǔ wèn qīng tiān, bù zhī tiān shàng gōng què , jīn xī shì hé nián]

The moon rounds the red mansion Stoops to silk-pad doors,
Shines upon the sleepless Bearing no grudge,
Why does the moon tend to be full when people are apart?
